What We Do

Oncology Rehabilitation is a progressive, individualized exercise program addressing cancer and treatment-related symptoms. Our core components of the rehabilitation program include resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, core/balance training and group exercise. The patient’s specific diagnosis and limitations will be taken into consideration when their program is developed.

Our compassionate team of experts offers individualized exercise programs, tools and guidance designed to help minimize the side effects of cancer treatments.

The Plan

How the Program Works

A referral from a physician is required for admission to this program. Once the physician
approval is obtained, a Cancer Rehabilitation Specialist conducts an initial assessment to
evaluate the specific needs of each patient. An individualized exercise plan is designed
for the patient depending on the severity and specificities of any cancer-related symptoms.

We work with patients with all types of cancer diagnoses, in all phases of treatment. Even after effective treatment, we can help manage conditions caused by cancer treatment. There is no time limit on how long a patient can participate. We want to help patients reach their goals before, during and after treatments

Who is Eligible

We can see patients starting at the time they receive their diagnosis, throughout their treatment and during remission or survivorship. Types of cancers included, but not limited to:

  • Breast
  • Brain
  • Colon/Rectal
  • Gynecologic
  • Head and neck
  • Leukemia/Lymphoma
  • Lung
  • Prostate
  • Skin
  • Testicular

What to Expect

Patients can expect to exercise two days per week in a class setting at low or moderate intensities for approximately one hour. Participants will use a variety of exercise equipment, including but not limited to treadmills, bicycles, rowing machines and resistance training machines. We will monitor patient vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate and Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE). Additional routines can be provided for at-home exercise to supplement two days a week in-person support.

Benefits

Research has shown that regular exercise can improve or even alleviate many of the
troublesome symptoms that come with a cancer diagnosis. It also shows a decreased
risk of mortality and developing common cancers. Potential benefits that can be achieved through Oncology Rehabilitation are:

  • Decreased fatigue
  • Improved app
  • Improved circulation
  • Increased strength
  • Improved physical function
  • Improved sleep quality
  • Decreased depression/anxiety
  • Enhanced sense of wellbeing
  • Improved health-related quality of life

We are Here for You

Patients can continue with our Oncology Rehabilitation Program throughout and following treatment. Punch cards can be purchased for a nominal fee. Assistance may be available for patients with identified financial need.

While exercise is an important aspect of overall health, it is equally important to live a full and balanced life. Oncology Rehabilitation works closely with your doctor and available mental health resources to ensure your care addresses physical and emotional needs.
